Rey"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Retrospective<\/h2>\n<p>Admittedly, I underestimated the amount of time fully transitioning into this new job would take.\u00a0 Lots of little things tend to add up &#8212; stuff like making extra trips to walmart because you need a shower rod.\u00a0 Despite my optimism in the last developer diary, I&#8217;m still working out of boxes.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I have some exciting news.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the past several months, I&#8217;ve been working on The Card in my spare time, despite not really being able to develop on a regular basis.\u00a0 Part of my efforts have been dedicated towards the construction of a new developer machine:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-403\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/setup1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Computer Setup\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/setup1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/setup1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/setup1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/setup1-1232x924.jpg 1232w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/setup1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I may still be working on a folding table from walmart, but at least Unity has all of the graphics firepower it will need to carry me for the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>A major reason why I wanted to do this is because I needed to establish a clear break between &#8220;me time&#8221; and development time.\u00a0 This setup is actually in my living room, and my personal computer is in my bedroom.\u00a0 This really helps me as I work from home as there is a clear mental break between both desks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Sprint Rey:\u00a0 01\/27\/2020 &#8211; 02\/07\/2020<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-404\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint-1024x641.png\" alt=\"Trello Board\" width=\"1024\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint-1024x641.png 1024w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint-768x481.png 768w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint.png 1147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the improvements I&#8217;ve made for my process in the meantime is incorporating several project management techniques I&#8217;ve picked up at my current job.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always been familiar with two-week sprints, but naming them gives them a sense of personality and helps provide a real milestone quality instead of just a random two-week period.<\/p>\n<p>This past sprint is named Rey (after the Star Wars character).\u00a0 In addition to sprint naming, I&#8217;ve begun estimating user stories with story points based on task complexity, which helps give me a better idea of how long things are going to take.<\/p>\n<p>During Sprint Rey, I managed to complete <strong>14 story points<\/strong> with another 5-point story halfway done.\u00a0 As I go through more sprints, I&#8217;ll be able to get a better sense for my average velocity.<\/p>\n<h3>Writing<\/h3>\n<p>Roughly half of this sprint was taken up by a lot of narrative development and rework.\u00a0 My initial ideas for The Card had been sitting in a sort of half-complete state and needed a complete overhaul with a full outline and stronger descriptions of each character and environment.<\/p>\n<h3>Architecture<\/h3>\n<p>The other half of the sprint was spent doing a lot of refactoring because I was running into a lot of issues with singleton-based state management.\u00a0 At my day job I do a lot of reactive programming with RXJS and wanted to see if I could figure out something similar in Unity.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/raQ3iHhE_Kk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This talk by Ryan Hipple at Unite Austin 2017 contains invaluable advice for working with scriptable objects that I spent a lot of time implementing, and it&#8217;s been extremely helpful.<\/p>\n<h3>Art<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the work I&#8217;ve been doing, I&#8217;ve also been collaborating with an artist who worked with me at the LIVE Lab.\u00a0 I will be commissioning him for the game&#8217;s sprites and backgrounds, and with the recent narrative work I accomplished, he had enough to start working on concept art.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-405\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_1-1024x578.png\" alt=\"concept art 1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_1-1024x578.png 1024w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_1-768x434.png 768w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_1.png 1188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-406\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_2.png\" alt=\"concept art 2\" width=\"786\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_2.png 786w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_2-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/concept_art_2-768x435.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are some first-pass sketches he sent to start working on the general look and feel of each character.<\/p>\n<h2>Last Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>Something that&#8217;s been on my mind recently is the effect of announcing goals ahead of time.\u00a0 I discovered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19389130\">study<\/a> done in 2009 by Peter Gollwitzer about the effects of declaring intentions.<\/p>\n<p>Gollwitzer implies that prematurely publicizing goals can decrease motivation because you receive positive feedback without actually doing anything, providing a false sense of completion.<\/p>\n<p>This idea has made me somewhat hesitant to announce plans both online and to friends in person.\u00a0 At the same time, when I do make progress, I would like to maintain a record.\u00a0 Therefore, I don&#8217;t really have any promises to make about the speed of The Card&#8217;s development or when I will post again, but I am extremely happy with the work that has been done thus far.<\/p>\n<p>Until next time,<\/p>\n<p>~Caleb<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Retrospective Admittedly, I underestimated the amount of time fully transitioning into this new job would take.\u00a0 Lots of little things tend to add up &#8212;
