{"id":419,"date":"2020-03-09T03:25:02","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T03:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/?p=419"},"modified":"2020-03-09T03:25:02","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T03:25:02","slug":"the-card-sprint-review-mara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serket.dev\/index.php\/2020\/03\/09\/the-card-sprint-review-mara\/","title":{"rendered":"The Card:  Sprint Review &#8211; Mara"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Retrospective<\/h2>\n<p>When I started this sprint I was just getting started it felt like.\u00a0 I was borrowing placeholder assets from The Arcana just to try and proof-of-concept out what a sprite system might look like.\u00a0 These past two weeks have been leaps and bounds forward.<\/p>\n<p>I have achieved the first milestone of many:\u00a0 a playable build on my android phone.\u00a0 The basic functionality is entirely present.\u00a0 All 15 scenes in the main route have been mocked up with placeholders &#8212; the backgrounds are just spot-holders I found online, but the sprites are all from concept art.<\/p>\n<h2>Sprint Mara:\u00a0 02\/24\/2020 &#8211; 03\/06\/2020<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-420\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trello.png\" alt=\"sprint mara trello\" width=\"961\" height=\"922\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/trello.png 961w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/trello-300x288.png 300w, https:\/\/serket.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/trello-768x737.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 961px) 100vw, 961px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Things to stop doing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rushing into features without spending enough time on design ahead of time.<\/li>\n<li>Worrying about trying to get the game on iOS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Things to keep doing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Asking questions of my fellow peers.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been asking other game programmers I&#8217;ve worked with in the past and learned about several obstacles to avoid before I encountered them and it saved me many headaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Things to start doing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create background prototypes for a more professional look<\/li>\n<li>Work towards a stronger vertical slice for a scene to flesh out the extent of sprite animations I&#8217;ll be needing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In many ways, Sprint Mara was a mad drive towards having a first playable on my phone.\u00a0 Since the end of last month I&#8217;ve been working on getting more involved with my local IGDA chapter and I didn&#8217;t have a completed build to bring to any of the events.\u00a0 In hindsight, I could have been building much sooner (it&#8217;s much easier to build for android than many tutorials would have me believe), but I wanted to get everything &#8220;just right&#8221; for a first playable build.<\/p>\n<p>Warranted or unwarranted, the hard work paid off and I have a fully functional prototype on my phone.\u00a0 Stubbed scripts play out for each of the eight routes, along with the ability to unlock a secret ninth route.\u00a0 I also managed to get save data working as intended, along with player preferences for the options in the main menu.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, I ended up wasting a lot of time suddenly concerned about iOS devices, which were never in my original plans to release the game onto.\u00a0 I started noticing just how many of my friends and colleagues had iPhones.\u00a0 However, I&#8217;m still a long way off from shipping the game and after some conversation with friends, I discovered a couple more budget-friendly options to allow me to ship for iOS should the need arise.<\/p>\n<h3>Progress<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-422\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleb-perkins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/main_menu.gif\" alt=\"main menu\" width=\"195\" height=\"419\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first of the changes involves a new main menu with more dynamic button control and a pop-up options panel.
